Welcome to Day 1 of the Whimsy Soul Witchy Wellness Challenge! Tenae and Kara here – over the next eleven days, we will be exploring all sorts of simple and accessible ways that you can embrace your inner witch during this, the most magickal time of the year.
In the lead up to Halloween, also known as Samhain, (pronounced sow-in), we will be challenging you to discover the easy ways you can incorporate magick into your real, daily life.
This is the most magickal time of the year, when your intuition, dreams, and sense of mysticism may be most heightened.
Challenge #1: How (And Why) You Should Know Your Big Three
To kick us off, we’re challenging you to identify your “big 3” in astrology! Your big three are your sun, moon, and rising signs – the three most important zodiac signs in your unique astrological or natal chart.
Your sun sign represents your joy and happiness, your moon sign represents your emotions and intuition, and your rising sign, (also called the ascendant), represents your outermost self and the aspect of you that others tend to meet first.
Together, they form the core essence of who you are as a person!
Knowing your signs make it helpful when reading horoscopes and astro charts so you can get a more accurate idea of how the planets will be impacting you on a personal level. It also acts as a way for you to check in with yourself (similar to how the enneagram supports inner reflection).
Jot your results down on your phone’s notepad or your daily journal, anywhere that’s easy for you to find in case you forget. If you want to share your Big Three with us, drop a comment below or share to Instagram Stories and tag Kara @thewhimsysoul so we can see!
Note: If you do not know your exact time of birth, just enter 12:00 pm but be aware that your rising/ascendant sign will be inaccurate. It’s also important to note that if the moon changed signs on the day you were born and you are unsure of your birth time, you will only be able to narrow your moon sign down to one of two possibilities.

Sun – Taurus
Moon – Cancer
Rising – Aries
In a nutshell – passionately stubborn about sums me up!
HA I love that!!
Virgo sun/Cancer moon/Cancer rising
I’m all about a structured, cozy, and safe home life. Yes, I love to go out and experience great adventures ALL THE TIME. But, at the end of the day, I need my safe spaces, my kitchen, my altar, my things, my routines, my big bed, my iPad, my pets, my partner.
Such a lovely combination!
Always identified as Libra. Learning i am a Capricorn moon helped to clear up some gaps. Now the rising was a surprise. I have identified as anything Pisces, nor do I now that I know
The rising sign can def surprise a lot of people! I’m hearing from many folks in the comments that Pisces isn’t something they identify with. What about the sign feels off for you?
So interesting! So there’s a couple things that could be happening when a part of our chart really doesn’t resonate.
#1 – it’s very possible that the birth time is inaccurate, especially if your rising sign is in the very early or very late degrees of Pisces. If you were born a bit earlier, you would be an Aquarius rising and if you were born a bit later, you would be an Aries rising – verrrrry different vibes, so that might be worth looking into.
#2 – if birth time is definitely accurate, then it’s often an invitation to shadow work. There are a lot of pre-conceived ideas about the zodiac signs and a few in particular tend to get a bad rap in pop culture (Pisces, Gemini, Scorpio, for example). So it may be that there are elements of Pisces to embrace within yourself or ideas about the energy of Pisces to release. Pisces is a highly intuitive, sensitive sign that’s often associated with psychic or empathic ability and is one of the most compassionate signs in the zodiac, so it has many gifts as well as potential shadows, just as all the signs do.
I hope this helps, Alex, let me know if you have any questions about this!
Sun = Gemini in the 9th House
Moon = Scorpio in the 2nd House
Rising = Libra
My chart is all about balance.
I love that!! Mine isn’t as balanced lol.
I’m also a virgo sun and leo moon!!
How do cusps come into play? I never identified with Pisces, so I always read the horoscope for Aquarius. It understand more now that I know it’s my Moon sign.
Great question!!! Astrology is SOOOO layered. Are you born on the cusps of Pisces? I have a friend who was born a couple hours before Virgo and while technically she’s a Leo, she’s VERY Virgo-y. Have you tried reading for your cusp sun sign and seeing if that resonates better?
If you want more resources, Teane has a lot on her website you can check out: https://witchoflupinehollow.com/astrology/
Thanks. I’ll check it out. I was born February 20 so right on the Aquarius/Pisces cusp.
I just recently became aware of the Big 3 and it’s been so much fun digging into it and reading more about my other two signs that I had never before considered to be mine!
Great question! Cusps are a little bit of a misnomer – planets and the sun and moon can physically only be in one sign at a time. However, it’s very common (as you discovered) for those born on the cusp of a sign to have planets in both signs, which is the real reason we identify with both or one more than the other! It’s entirely possible you could also have other planets in Aquarius, such as Mercury or Venus.
Also, pro tip – horoscopes are actually written for your rising sign so I would recommend reading them for Taurus!
Sun – Cancer
Moon – Libra
Rising – Sag
LOL! This cracked me up!
I am going to look into this rising of Virgo. I don’t believe people see these aspects of me.
Oooh I love this combination – so intuitive and nourishing!
Ooh happy Scorpio season!
Scorpio – Sun
Cancer – Moon
Taurus – Rising
Still learning how the moon and rising contribute to my personality and outlook. I feel strongly as a Scorpio and all things dark and brooding! haha
Happy Scorpio season!! It’s entirely possible you could have additional planets in Scorpio so that could be worth checking out. The moon is like your most inner self, the most private and personal part of who you are and the rising is like the outermost layer of you. Also, Taurus and Scorpio are opposites so this is a very witchy and magickal combination!
Peace loving and sociable, but standing up for my family and friends and always seeing the best in people…
Aww I love this!
Ascending Sign- Libra
Need to look further to see if it fits me and my astrological sign is Taurus a newbie in this.
So both Taurus and Libra are ruled by Venus – this means that Venusian themes of love, art, beauty, pleasure, good food and conversation, etc, are all pretty core parts of who you are. The moon is at home in Cancer so deep down, you’re always really looking for comfort, safety, and restful interactions.
Also, the hallmark of Libra rising is that you’re always seeking balance in every area of your life!
Closet witch here! Glad we can post in the comments to interact without having to post on social media 🙂
Sun in Virgo: value neatness and order (SO TRUE)
Moon in Aquarius: observant and love to analyze (some say I am an introvert but I always respond with I am just watching)
Rising in Libra: harmonious, gentle, and fair (accurate as well. I’ve never looked into my rising much)
Hello and welcome! Glad you’re here. Love how these resonate for you – the hallmark of Libra rising is that you’re always seeking balance in every area of your life!
hm. looks like i’m very nurturing and have strong feminine energy, but i also have a tendency to be dramatic. i think that’s pretty much true! my sun sign is actually on the cusp of scorpio, so that also makes a lot of sense with my personality.
Love how this resonates for you! Cusps are actually a misnomer – planets and the sun and moon can only be in one sign at a time, but it’s very likely that you may have other planets besides your sun in Scorpio, such as Mercury or Venus!
Interesting, need to investigate all of this!
Oooh I love this! With Scorpio sun and moon, you were born on or very near a new moon in Scorpio – like the one we will have on Tuesday!
I was born on May 20th, the Taurus/Gemini cusp.
I love this combination! Cusps are actually a bit of a misnomer – planets and the sun and moon can only be in one sign at a time, but it’s very likely that you have other planets in Gemini, such as Mercury or Venus!
Rising : Sagittarius
Lots of earth which is fitting. I’ve always loved nature and am quite grounded, for the most part. I definitely feel at home with some structure and neatness and love feeling cozy when I want to relax. Autumn is my favorite season for many reasons, one of them being all the cozy sweaters, scarves, and thick tall socks I get to break out 🙂
Oooh I love this combination! With your sun and rising in the same sign, that means you were born near sunrise. I also have Virgo rising and totally know what you mean about loving the coziness of autumn and home.
Oooooh this is SO magickal! Taurus and Scorpio are natural opposites and form the axis of the goddess and the witch. And since you have both your sun and moon in Taurus, that means you were born on or very near the new moon in Taurus – so witchy!
Cancer sun, Taurus moon, and Leo rising. Fun fact it’s the same as Meryl Streep 🙂
Ahh I love that how cool!!
I definitely resonate with the cancer side of things but I need to do more research on what my Libra rising means
Ooh love this – because you have both your sun and moon in Cancer, that means you were born on or very near the new moon in Cancer! The hallmark of Libra rising is that you are always seeking balance in every area of your life.
I have LOTS of Libra in my chart and I’m on the cusp of Libra and Scorpio.
Oh I love that! Because you have both your sun and rising in the same sign, that means you were born near sunrise.
Cusps are actually a bit of a misnomer – planets and the sun and moon can only be in one sign at a time, but it’s very likely that you may have other planets in Scorpio, such as Mercury or Venus!
Sun = Libra
Moon = Cancer
Rising = Capricorn
I’ve always identified strongly as Libran and when I read about Cancer there were no surprises. My rising surprises me, however, and I need to check in with others if this is how they see me as it doesn’t feel right. My coworkers could see me this way though.
This is interesting! So Cancer and Capricorn are opposites so it could feel like an inner and outer tension – like your outermost self is kind of arguing with your innermost self, if that makes sense. The common thread between them is safety and sustainability, they just approach these ideas from different perspectives.
It also makes sense that Libra is a strong identifier for you, as this puts Cancer in your 7th house which is the house associated with Libra – so it’s kind of like having both your sun and moon in Libra!
I am Gemini sun ( however 8th house is intercepted for me with sun here)
I once had someone tell me there were 3 “bad ” signs, I said, those are my big 3 and they are all amazing! Just don’t get me mad!
No such thing as bad signs! Maybe bigger energy than others lol!
Yep, as Kara said no such thing as bad signs – everything in astrology is completely neutral and can be expressed in beautiful, empowering or shadowy ways!
Not a lot of fire in my chart. Still trying to connect with my Aquarius part of me
So with Aquarius rising, that actually places your Libra sun in the 9th house which is fire energy! So you may have more fieriness within you than you realize <3
Sun = Capricorn
Moon + Rising = Pisces
I have a massive Capricorn stellium (7 placements) and no Air signs at all in my chart.
Aquarius – Sun
Virgo – Moon
Virgo – Rising
If you can believe it, I’m prone to overthinking.
