Hyatt Maui: Look Inside This Kaanapali Beach Resort

Amazing Chef' Special Sushi roll at Japengo at the Hyatt Regency Maui

Aloha! My husband and I traveled to Maui to celebrate his 27th birthday this April and, since it was our first time to Hawaii, we wanted to be extra special. After spending a few days in Kihei using that beach town as our base for tons of exploration on the Southern side, we drove up to West Maui coast to the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa, a stunning resort that was hard for us to leave at the end of our vacation.

Location: Kaanapali, Maui
Type: Resort
IG Aesthetics: 5/5
Good For: Couples, honeymoon, families

The Hyatt Maui is one of those places that oozes fun and relaxation. From the beachside cabanas to their fun nightly Luau and plenty of top-notch onsite restaurants to keep your belly happy, we found it really hard to leave once we arrived. If you are looking for places to stay in Maui, keep reading to find my detailed review on the Hyatt Maui, my insider tips for making the most of your time here, hacks for booking the best deal and more!

Make sure to head to the beach for sunset each evening to catch the sky turning pink, purple and orange. Hyatt Maui offers stunning sunset views footsteps from your room!

My husband and I spent the first half of our trip to Maui in Kihei. As travel bloggers, we’re always running around on trips trying things out for ourselves also we can report back to you on what’s worth it and what’s not. We knew they Hyatt Maui was going to be one of those beach resorts we wouldn’t want to leave once we arrived, so we spent a few nights down the coast and barely any time in our hotel. From sunrise over Haleakala to a day driving the Road To Hana, we were 100% ready to just soak in luxury and relaxation when we checked into the Hyatt Maui!

From the moment we stepped into the grand lobby, we were treated with nothing but stellar and friendly service. We booked a King Oceanview Room in the main tower and was really impressed by the size of the bathroom area and loved that our deck overlooked the pool area and ocean (good for people watching!) I believe these rooms were remodeled recently as everything felt up to date. (I did read some reviews on TripAdvisor that people in other towers felt like their rooms needed a remodel but ours was great.)

Pro Tip: Ask the valets for recommendations of things to do in the area. They have a great locals take on West Maui!

Each morning, we found ourselves lazily waking up, taking a morning stroll around the property after breakfast, lounging in a cabana or on the beach during the afternoon and feasting each evening at one of the on-site restaurants. Very romantic and the perfect way to unwind! I caught up on reading Lethal White and got a top-notch tan while sipping on the coconut shakes. We also saw a lot of turtles hanging out by Kaanapali Beach from our cabana!

Insider’s Tip: The pool area gets very busy and it can be really hard to grab a chair unless you are awake by 8am. Instead, book a cabana rental ahead of your visit. I recommend booking on the grass around the low 40’s mark so you are away from the pool and instead have an ocean view! You can also ball out and get an Ocean Hale cabana if you want more room to spread out. Book HERE.

One evening, we did the Romance Under The Stars tour where we drank champagne on the rooftop of the Hyatt Maui and learned all about the constellations. I finally learned where the north star is (I’ve been a little confused on that my whole life, to be honest), saw an up-close view of the moon and saw tons of other stars. Did you know that in Hawaii, you can see Northern AND Southern constellations? Very cool and very romantic!

Hyatt Regency Maui Restaurants

There are a lot of Hyatt Regency Maui restaurants onsite:

  • Japengos
  • Son’z Steakhouse
  • ‘Ūmalu
  • Honolulu Coffee
  • Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice
  • Grotto Bar
  • Swan Court Breakfast

We had dinner at Japengos and were BLOWN away by the menu and vibe here! We lucked out and got a corner table on the grass which overlooks the ocean. We had a clear view of the sunset while dining – so romantic! I highly recommend dining here during your stay as we fell in love with the sushi. The rolls here are out of this world. I recommend ordering sashimi, a roll or two and trying an entree (I personally really adored their pork belly dish!!) Make sure to try one of their signature cocktails and don’t forget desert – malasadas are my recommendation! Lastly, make sure to book a table ahead of time because this place is popular among visitors.

We had access to the Hyatt Maui Regency Club during our stay which was a game changer. If you have points to use, I highly recommend using them at the Hyatt in Maui! Their breakfast spread was tasty – smoked salmon, bread, cereals, tons of fresh fruit, yogurts, coffee, etc. The evening food was great as well – hummus, cheeses, meats and chips. The beer inside this club is also just $4, which is half the price of the bar outside. It was so nice to be able to pop in here each morning for breakfast. If you don’t have Regency Club access, they have a hotel buffet you can eat at. No need to leave the hotel!

HYATT MAUI LUAU

It was our first time to Maui so of course, we had to do a Luau! The Hatty Maui Luau (Drums of the Pacific Luau) was SO Much fun. We had VIP seats and arrived a bit early which meant we were seated RIGHT in front which made for such a fun evening of watching the dancers and learning about Maui’s culture history. Guys, I even got to dance on stage at the end!!

Pro Tip: It’s worth it to upgrade to VIP for quicker seating, better views & quicker service.

The food was fantastic and we even got to try Poi! (Apparently visitors don’t usually like Poi but I did. I think it tastes like un-sweated apple sauce.) It’s buffet style dining with tons of options, plus dessert and an open bar. The show lasts about 2-2.5 hours and I think it’s a great last night in Hawaii activity to top of a romantic visit to the Hyatt Maui Resort. Book your Luau here!

WHAT TO PACK FOR THE HYATT MAUI

This resort just makes you want to do either one of two things: live in a swimsuit the entire time, or dress up in pretty floral maxis. I found myself running around in just a swimsuit in the day and dressing up each evening for dinner. I recommend packing a few swimsuit options and some nice dressier outfits (though if dressing up isn’t your thing – or isn’t your partner’s thing – don’t worry! It’s not a snooty hotel here, nobody will care!) I personally just like wearing pretty outfits like this one.

Don’t forget to pack reef safe sunscreen and Aloe! !! We went through 2 sunscreen bottles and half an aloe bottle during our Maui trip!

my favorite swimsuits for the pool & beach

my favorite dresses for dinner

Pro tip: Looking for the Hyatt Lahaina? That’s this hotel! It’s also sometimes referred to as the Hyatt Kaanapali, there’s just one Hyatt resort in Maui, not two! I saw some confusion on TripAdvisor as I was researching. There is an Andaz down the coast that is part of the Hyatt family.

Cabana
Morning swim at the Hyatt

The Maui Hyatt Regency was stunning, but we knew it would be! Hyatts are all over the United States as is one of our go-to hotel families to book from as we know it’ll be a great time. Read my review on the Hyatt New Orleans and Hyatt Lake Tahoe!
